My Health Journey
Sweat poured down my face, and every bone in my body was aching with fatigue. I felt as though I might faint, but the humiliation of passing out in front of everyone spurred me on. With grim determination I vowed that I would finish what I had started. To most people what I just described sounds like I might have been a participant in a grueling marathon, or perhaps subject to some form of exhausting physical labor. In reality, this would mark my third consecutive day of my journey towards becoming a healthier individual. Only a week before my doctor had warned me that I could be at risk for diabetes due to my family history. It was then that I decided to embark on a journey towards a healthier lifestyle. Making the choice to lead a healthier life not only improved my mental and physical health, but also improved the lives of the people I hold dearest.
After I returned from the doctor’s office, I called my mom and broke down. I was scared of developing diabetes, and needed her guidance. We both agreed it was time for a lifestyle change, and decided to join a gym together. We committed to a six-week boot camp, and also started an eating plan. For the first time in awhile I had boundless energy. I began losing weight, and gaining muscle. I could see a change in my mother too. As our six-week class came to an end she looked vibrant and healthy. We both agreed to stick to our healthy eating plans, as well as continue to work out.
Another six weeks flew by, and then another. Soon my friends began to notice the changes I was going through. One day, about three months from the start of my journey, my best friend asked me if I could help her get on a healthier track as well. She had been having trouble sleeping lately, and thought maybe exercise could help. We started a yoga class together, and neither of us could believe the difference. We were mentally sharper, more flexible, and easily able to find peace amid our busy lives.
Throughout the next few months, I attained every goal I had set for myself. I was overjoyed to find out that my entire family had started eating healthier and working out more frequently. I was also delighted that I had been able to help my best friend achieve her health goals. When I returned to the doctor six months later, my blood work looked great. He congratulated me, and assured me I was on the right track. I left feeling more confident than ever.
Committing to a healthier lifestyle was one of the best choices I ever made for myself. It has made my life, and the lives of my loved ones completely change for the better. Looking back, I would never want to return to my old lifestyle. I could not be happier with the place I am at. I hope to continue on this path for years to come.
