Online Learning: For Procrastinators
Though out my entire high school education I was known for procrastinating on important matters. I wanted to graduate, but I was uninterested in the involved semantics. Separating my feelings from my responsibilities turned my whole life into a game, that I was eager to play. To successfully master online learning, you must completely retire procrastinating habits. Changing your perspective of the online experience is the most effective way to begin braking these habits. Online learning is like playing video games, picking up the controller, then playing to win. Selecting a character, using cheat codes, and reaching new levels are the three most important things to consider as you play.
Its fall semester you’ve selected your courses and now the game is uploaded. What should you do? Breathe. You’re in total control of the player you choose to perform the mission with. Even if you believe that you aren’t cut out for the task, assuming the character role will remind you of who you must be. As the player you already have habits of waiting until the last minute to complete assignments. And in most cases, you also suffer from sloth, stated in the article, (“The Seven Deadly Sins of Students”) “Sloth: Students often postpone required readings and assigned preparations, making it hard for them to understand their classes the next day. Gradually, lectures and discussions that were once interesting start to seem boring and irrelevant, and the temptation to skip classes becomes greater and greater, especially when the classes are in the morning.” Knowing this, you must be vigilant when selecting a character to play with. Pick a character with strengths in time management, proactive, involved, and utilities resources. It’s going to take a daily conscious effort to replace old habits, with better characteristics.
Now that you’ve determined the role to play, taking advantage of all the offered cheat codes will prepare you for each class. Instructors usually provide online resources such as: articles, printable lecture notes, textbook readings, and pre-course work. The article (“Online Learning,” ENG 1101 eCore course) stated, “Complete every assignment as thoroughly as possible. Put thought and effort into your work to get the most out of it. Nothing in a class should be considered “busy work”; everything contains a valuable lesson or valuable practice. For example, my first essay in my ENG1101 class had a lot of specific requirements to earn winning grade. Thankfully my instructor gave a pre-writing assignment to help facility my thoughts. For me it served as a sweet cheat code to take advantage of, in doing so I earned an excellent grade, and progressed on to a new level.
Lastly, reaching a new level in online learning may be the goal, but the real lesson comes from enjoying the game along the way. From every passing grade, it required diligent work throughout the process. I’m sure there will be times when you feel as if all your efforts may have been a failed attempt, you can still redeem yourself. (“4 Time Management Tips for Online Students”) article stated "Students are always hesitant to ask for help," says Popovich, with ASU Online. "They start to drown and they take drastic measures, or they don't take measures at all. Either way, they end up making a mistake." So, as you progress into next course level, don’t give up, continue to ask for help and guidance along the way. Take advantage of the help your instructors are willing to give not just in each course, but most importantly in each assignment.
In conclusion, breaking from procrastinating habits might start off as a daunting task, but it’s something you can overcome. And if you can accept that you are always in total control of the game, you can achieve anything you put your mind to. No matter what level you begin on, the character you choose to play with will help you overcome procrastination.
